Team aims for
strong finish
By SAM LOWRY
News Reporter
An appreciative home crowd
got to see the Goldendale
Timberwolves' wrestling team
for the first time this year on
Saturday afternoon, welcoming
them back from the snow-
lengthened break as they took
on de Elum.
With eight (mostly non-
league) December tournaments
under their belts, and five
(mostly league) to go this month
before district championships
in Granger on February 6-7, the
'Wolves are angling for position
and preparedness.
In Saturday's e~ent (which
also featured exhibition
matchups with wrestlers from
visiting Sherman County),
Goldendale won in one weight
class by pin and in five weight
classes by forfeit, while Cle
Elum won in three weight class-
es by pin and in three by forfeit.
The final score was a tie, 36-
36, but the tournament was
awarded to Cle Elum because of
their greater number of wins by
pin, according to new prep rules
that do not allow tied matches.

The post-holiday season is
proving tough for most of the
smaller east-county towns' bas-
ketball teams, although the
Klickitat girls won twice this
week and go to 5-2 in league
play, with four starters each
averaging nine points per game.
It was heartbreak for the
Glenwood boys, who lost three
games by a total of eight points.
Lyle took a pair from Glenwood,
while the Glenwood girls
topped Trout Lake, Jodi Holly
and Ashley Brasnell scoring
eight points apiece. Bickleton's
girls beat Yakima Tribal, going
to 2-3 in league play.

Chas Warner pinned his oppo-
nent in one minute, 40 seconds.
At 189 pounds, Vance Schafer
was pinned in 3:3o; at 16o
pounds, Saul Losolla was
pinned in 1:55; and at 119
pounds, Paul Whitner was
pinned in 1:56.
Timberwolves Jared Witt,
Matt Smith, Josh Ruff, Daniel
Sanchez, and Cody Hamilton
won by forfeit. Ruff, Sanchez,
and Smith later scored pins in
exhibition matchups.
Coach Omar Flores is enthu-
siastic about his 2oo3-o4 team.
"We're getting ready for our
post-season tournaments," he
said. "I am really proud of the
[team's] effort... We have met
up with many 4A, 3A, and 2A
opponents.., it will only make
them tougher and better."
Ruff, a senior, leads the
team with a 19-4 record at 135
pounds. "He has his eyes set
on making it to state this year,
and I think he has a good
shot," said Flores. So does
Whitner, also a senior, draw-
ing on four years' experience
with the team.
Warner, a junior, placed
fourth at state last year, and
coming off an ankle sprain he is
on track for a return trip.
Warner pinned all three oppo-
nents at last week's Naches invi-
tational.
Hamilton, also a junior, fin-
