U. S. FUNDS
By Knue Hill
With the Department of Interior
hill nearly ready for presentation to
the House. the question of which
reclamation projects will receive ap-
propriations is a question which is
of interest to some sixty Represent-
atives in Congress from 17 western
states.
Funds for Washington go to the
Grand Coulee and Roza projects.
Grand Coulee is scheduled to receive
$13.000,000, a sum equal to that
appropriated last year. The Yakima-
Roza project is listed to receive
$1,000,000; from the Indian Irriga-
tion budget, the WaPato project is
approved for an aPlopriation of
$I00,000.

sity for the completion of such pro-
jects as the Roza unit of the Yakima
project without unnecessary delay.
A news clipping from Olympia, for
example, tells me that 60,000 "dust
bowl emigrants" have came to the
Pacific Northwest in the last 18
months. New lands must be develop-
ed for them. Ours is the single re-
maining "frontier" where they can
settle and re-build.
But some members of Congress,
those particularly from the Eastern
city districts, are not either alarmed
or interested. Congress is dominated
by Eastern representatves and will
allow only so much of an appropria-
tion for reclamation items. This
year's gross appropriations for rec-
lamation is slightly lass than $$9,-
Naturally, we would like to get 000,000.

the scone of action realize the necee-[ I would like to see the Grand
i
Coluee fund raised to $15,000,000;
the Roza to $1,500,000; and the
Wapato to $250,000. The early com-
pletion of the Roza project will
mean that we can try to secure
funds for such deserving projects as
the Klickitat. A few Individual i
members will join with me to try to
get these Increased amounts, but
whether we will succeed is doubtful
in the face of the economy program.
New hope can be found in the
movement which is on foot to or-
ganize the members from irrigation
states. With an able leader and a
strong organization, concerted ac-
tion can be taken in behalf of our
irrigation projects. More irrigation
money can be demanded and new
frends in Congress made for irriga-
tion.

PIONEER GOLDENDALE
PHOTOGRAPHER
VISITS
Goldendale's first photogra-
pher, Harry Carratt, who stat-
ed a photograph gallery here
in 1889 shortly before Wash-
ington became a state, was back
in Ktickitat this week renew-
ing old acquaintanceships.
Now retired, Carratt resides
in Kennewick. While in Gold-
endale he is visiting his son
Ted Carratt and other relatives
and friends. A photographer
here for nearly four decades,
Carratt has probably taken
more Klickitat county pictures
than any other living man.
Shortly after starting his
gallery here in 1889 he photo-
graphed the half completed
brick structure that it now the
