86 percent of the 184
returned surveys ask for a
local theater.
The age-based comments
are interesting for a town that
sees itself as retirement com-
munity. According to the
Census Bureau, Census-2ooo
data, only 13 percent of the
people in Klickitat County are
of retirement age whereas 26
percent of the population is in
the 25-to-45 age group.
Furthering the idea of jobs,
consensus exists within the

Creating a town theme was
thrown into the survey and
recommendations came in for
"small town," "Dutch," and
"Lewis and Clark."
One respondent countered,
"You don't need a theme for a
town when there is employ-
ment."
What travelers want in a
destination is more elusive
still. And, though the survey
respondents call for tourism
there is no mention, in the
comments section, of what
type of tourist the town should
appeal to.
The survey reads that the
city is unfriendly to business
and that some form of indus-
try must grow. Negativity
shows soundly in the survey
and, regardless of the reality,
the public perception is grim.

Again, like the word
tourism, there is little defini-

other than jobs that could
support a family. Without
industry, people feel that
Goldendale is going to crash.
This possibly refers to the
prison that never came and a
Wal-Mart distribution center
that went elsewhere. Perhaps
it's a reflection of the business
climate in Dallesport with
favor from the county com-
missioners.
When all is read in the sur-
vey, in the end, people ask for
many things that exist
already, in some form, in
Goldendale. There exists
some employment base and
some entertainment and even
some tourism.
Crain found that a lot of
folks were asking for services

PLANS TO BE
SCRUTINIZED
If the previous planning
documents are anything to go
by, getting at such details will
be a painstaking task.
The 2000 master plan runs
to 91 densely-worded pages. It
does set out rationale for
building the care wing that
includes six specific elements,
ranging from inadequate ven-
tilation to the looming state
requirements.
Dr. Garnett took it a step
further when he said that the
medical staffs members need
to become more involved in
vetting the design. Comments
during the meeting suggested
that the same may be true for
other departments, too.
A THIRD BOND ?
Yet there were many
inclined to trust the board's
work to date and the archi-
tect's figures. Said Goldendale
Mayor Mark Sigfrinius, "If you
