GOI,DENDALE, WASHINGTON FEBRUARY 22,2017--3 Micheal Williams Micheal Dwayne Williams passed away at his home in Goldendale on Feb. 13, 2017 at the age of 57. He was born in Yakima to Dwayne and Sharon Williams on March 14, 1959. Micheal grew up in Klickitat County and worked as a truck driver, hauling logs for Douvravsky, Moun- tain Logging, C&H and SDS lumber companies. Micheal loved horses and training them, and log trucks. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Ser- ena Williams of Goldendale; children, Casey Popenoe (Kristi) of Chehalis, Celeste Crabtree (Jordan) of Bell- ingham, Richie Popenoe of Trout Creek, Montana, and Morgan Williams (Sheri), Evan Williams and Zander Williams, all of Goldendale; parents Dwayne and Sha- ron Williams of Goldendale; brothers Lee Williams (Tam- my) and Chris Williams (Ra- chel), both of Goldendale; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother Pat Williams. Sometimes he rides his afternoon, Josh Ogden care- bike, but not today. fully wraps his newspapers "I wish it wouldn't rain," in plastic bags. "A lot of he says. And yet there is a houses don't have awnings on them, so the papers get wet if they don't have bags," he explains. Josh has been delivering for The Sentinel since 2011. Currently he pulls double duty, covering Routes B and smile on his face. "Some- times people roll down their windows and ask me how I like this job. I tell them I love it--being out here and meeting people." Josh also regards the job as a duty. "People are counting on us." In addition to deliver- ing papers, Josh serves as The Sentinel's self-described "breaking news guy," cov- ering inclement weather, road conditions and EMS dispatches. With the aid of a police scanner, social media and his own dogged curiosity, Josh contributes invaluable legwork to The Sentinel. Recent examples include his reporting on winter road closures and the primary school lockdown. Josh is also no stranger to the office, frequently stopping in to cheer the staff with a "Good job!" or "I'm counting on you guys." The Sentinel thanks Josh for his encouragement, positive attitude and years of dedi- cated service. Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors des- ignated the week of George Washington's birthday as National FFA Week in rec- ognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week runs Saturday to Sat- urday, encompassing Feb. 22, Washington's Birthday. Goldendale FFA chapter activities for 2016-2017 Women in welding ," On Feb. 23; about 25 fe- male agriculture students participated in the Women in Welding Career Event. The students made metal roses using MIG welders and torches. They were coached by industry professionals, including four past Golden- dale Graduates--Morgan Gamble, Mark Hilton, Will Bowdish and Cben Hites-- as well as a parent, Steve Priddy. First year member On Feb. 29, the FFA First Year Member Team com- peted in the District IV contest. This event helps members learn about FFA, public speaking, teamwork, and many other useful soft skills. Both teams, consist- ing of five seventh graders each, qualified to compete at the state level. Sales contest On Feb. 29, Goldendale High School hosted the Dis- trict IV sales contest. The ag- ricultural sales team placed fourth and qualified for the state FFA convention in May. The team consisted of Katie, Alyssa, Joseph, and Nathan. Katie Priddy placed first out of 30 competitors. Goldendale FFA agriscience fair On March 10, around 70 ag- riscience students presented their agriscience fair pro- jects in the Goldendale Mid- die School gym to a panel of eight community judges as a pre-qualifier for the state ag- riscience fair. The event was attended by dver 250 parents and community members. Raising salmon The FFA chapter raised and released over 200 Chi- nook salmon in March in the Little Klickitat River. Mem- bers will also participate in a habitat restoration project as part of this project. Guys in floral On March 30, Debbie and Ken Clark, owners of Clarks Floral, worked with 25 male agriculture students to construct their own floral arrangement. Additionally, students had the opportuni- ty to ask questions about ca- reers in the floral industry. The purpose of this event was to encourage males to take plant biology at GHS and possibly pursue careers year m revmw in horticulture. Toppenish livestock show On May 2, the Goldendale FFA livestock judging team traveled to Toppenish to compete in the judging con- test. The GMS team placed seventh and the GHS team placed llth out of 22 teams. Tiana Watson placed 12th out of 110 individuals. Mem- bers also helped serve food in the District IV chuck wagon. Ag day The Goldendale FFA host- ed its first annual FFA Ag Day on April 29. The goal of the event was to increase youths' awareness of the ag- ricultural industry through hands-on interactive learn- ing activities. Goldendale FFA members in seventh - 12th grade developed edu- cational stations for local students in fourth grade and below. The event was attend- ed by students of Goldendale Primary School, Roosevelt School District, and Learn- ing Ladder Christian Pre- school. Plant sale May 6-7, the Goldendale FFA chapter held the plant sale in the GHS greenhouse. A variety of flowers were sold. The funds raised went to support the chapter's ac- tivities and travel. State FFA convention Goldendale FFA attended the Washington State FFA Convention May 11 - 15. The chapter was awarded fifth out of over 200 in the Na- tional Chapter Award. Mem- bers Daniel and Kassandra Wedgwood presented the application activities. Mem- bers Lene Riggers, Madison Krull, Cody Farmer, Alden Bothamley, Joseph Sepul- veda, Cassie Kayser, Alyssa Merry, Katie Priddy and Jo- seph Randall completed the written application. All 11 members have qualified for national this October in In- dianapolis, Indiana. Awards were given for achievement in the several different areas ofagriscience. District IV leadership camp On June 3-5, 2016, District IV FFA leadership camp was held at Brooks Environmen- tal Learning Center in Gold- endale. Washington agricultur- al leadership experience Goldendale FFA mem- bers Cassie Kayser, Morgan Coyne, Garrett Schroeder and Cody Farmer were se- lected to attend the Washing- ton agricultural leadership experience (WALE) program in Yakima, on July 19- 21. Dur- ing the conference, members attended tours at Allen Broth- ers Fruit, Pegasus Equine Therapy Project, Perry Tech- nical Institute, Bale Breaker Brewing Company, USDA ARS Lab and Owen Roe Winery. They developed resumes, met with human resources offi- cials and participated in a job interviewing workshop. Ad- ditionally, students attended a dinner and posed career-relat- ed questions to professionals.
