On Feb. lo, the Goldendale
FFA Chapter hasted District IV
Ag Issues/lst Year Member/Job
Interview competitions. The cri-
teria for the Ag Issues competi-
tion entailed speaking and pre-
senting a oarrent event topic to
a team of judges. Mark Hoctor,
Mark Miller, Alicia Partlow, Jed
Garcia, Will Hudson, Tonya Lee,
Melissa Better and Matt Lefever
presented Prescribed Bums as
this year's ag issue topic, winning
them second place at the com-
petition. The first Year Member
contest tests agriculture knowl-
edge and asks the team members
to discuss a career related topic.
The topic this year was "Prepare
an agriscience presentation to
the school board" This team con-
sisted of Kelly Link, Adrianne
Ransom, Elizabeth Schuster, Will
Hudson and Jordan Dove. The
Freshmen placed third in their
competition. We had four indi-
viduals compete in the Job Inter-
view contest this year. Randi
Nickels was first, Melissa Better
placed second, Sarah Gunkel
placed fourth and Megann
McCabe placed sixth. Randi,
Melissa, and Sarah will compete
at the state competion in Pull-
man in May.
FFA WELDING Co~
On March 4, the District W
welding contest was held at
Grandview High School. The
Goldendale contestants were
Mark Hoctor, David Byers, Matt
Wilkins, Justin Shupe, Jason
Bishoff, Jed Garcia, Jake Garcia,
Chad Rhoades, Charlie Collins,
Will Hudson, Axel Matron, Mark
Miller and Jared Miller. Some of
the events they competed in were
arc welding, wire welding, gas
welding, and gas cutting. The
schools that attended were
Grandview, Prosser, Riverview,
Mabton and Goldendale.
Sun DtSTmCT LEADERSHIP
On Mar. 94, Sub District
Leadership competition was
hosted by Zillah FFA Chapter.
The schools that attended were
Grandview, Prosser, Mabton,
Sunnyside, Finley, Toppenish,
Wapato, Kamiahkin, Zillah and
Goldendale. Our students were
ifivolved in public speaki~. Our
participants were Sarah Gunkel
and Randi Nickels. Sarah and
Randi will all be going to districts
for a chance to compete at state
level.
DISTRICT LEADERSHIP
The Prosser FFA Chapter host-
ed the District Leadership com-
petitions on April 21. Golden-
dale competed in the public
speaking contest. The public
speakers, Randi Nickels and
Sarah Gunkel placed overall with
speeches entitled Xenotrans-
plantation and biotechnology.
Randi Nickels will be competing
at state level next.
FORESTRY Co~
On.h, pril 25, the FFA attend-
ed a forestry competition that
was held at Squilchuck State Park
in Wenatchee. Five Goldendale
FFA members competed in this
competfion which includes iden-
tifying and making accurate
measurements of trees placing
third. The team went on to the
State Forestry contest that was
held in Deer Park. The members
participating at s~ate were Mark
Hoctor, Mark Miller, Jed Garcia,
Charlie Collins and David Byers.
JR. ~K SHOW
The Central Washington Jr.
Livestock show was held in Top-
penish on April 27-30. FFA
members from Goldendale and
from around the state exhibited
and judged livestock at the exhi-
bition. Goldendale attended the
judging contest with members
Sarah Gunkel, Randi Nickels,
Mark Hoctor, Kelly Link, and
Will Hudson.
PLANT SALE
On May 9, the Goldendale
FFA chapter held the plant sale in
the GHS greenhouse. Avariety of
lovely flowers were sold. The hot
selling item was the hanging bas-
kets constructed for mother's
day. The funds raised went to
support chapter activities and
travel.
STALE FFA CONVENTION
The 73rd State FFA Conven-
tion was held May 15thq8th on
theWSU campus in Pullman,
Washington. The chapter was
awarded a gold in National Chap-
ter for their 2002-2003 FFA
activities. Goldendale will com-
pete at the national convention
in Louisville, Ky., in November.
The chapter received the Presi-
dents Award for involving their
members in a number of activi-
ties. Goldendale FFA competed
in a number ofstate contests dur-
ing the annual event. Randi
Nickels, Sarah Gunkel and Melis-
sa Better competed in the job
interview career development
event. Randi competed in pre-
pared public speaking with her
speech entitled organic farming.
Mark Hoctor, Jed Garcia, Alicia
Partlow, Tonya Lee, and Will
Hudson competed in ag issues
with a presentation on prescnqaed
bums. Kelly Link, Will Hudson,
and Elizabeth Schuster compet-
ed in the Meats Judging contest.
Kelly Link, Elizabeth Schuster,
Will Hudson and Adrianne Ran-
som competed in the first year
member contest while in Pull-
man. Randi Nickels received
profiency awards in natural
resources and wildlife manage-
ment and was awarded $50 cash
for each proficiency award. Mark
Hoctor was 1st in the agri-entr~
preneurship award, receiving a
$10o.oo cash prize and 2nd in
Diversified Livestock profiency,
receiving a $50 cash prize. Gold-
endale member Matt LeFever
received his State FFA Degrees
during the week. Matt was also
second in his sheep profidency
award and was third in the star
farmer award. Matt was recog-
nized for the accomplishments
he made with his sheep project
during his four years of high
school. Melissa Better was

were 2,900 FFA members in
attendance from throughout the
State of Washington at this years
convention.
FFA BANQUET
On May 20, the FFA par-
ent/member banquet was held
at the GHS cafeteria. This din-
ner was a chance for members,
parents, and guests to gather and
recognize the members. Awards
were given for achievement in
the several different areas of agri-
science.

DiSTraCT LEADERSHIP CAMP
On ,June 16-18, District WFFA
Leadership Camp was held at
Brooks Park in Goldendale, WA.
This was a chance for FFA mem-
bers from District IV to gain
teamwork and leadership skills
during the camp. There were
various activities for the FFA
members such as leadership
workships, a member vs. advisor
softball game and members were
able to go on a hike to see a
forestry site. Goldendale FFA

Mid-Columbia Livestock Show
was held in Tygh Valley, Ore.,
FFA members from Washington
and Oregon exhibited and judged
livestock at the annual event. In

KLICKITAT COUNTY FAIR
On Aug. 21-25, the Klickitat Co
Fair was held at the Goldendale
Fair Grounds. FFA members
from around the county judged
and exhibited livestock at this
annual fair. Kristi Devries exhiq>
ited a steer. Alicia Partlow, Dustin
Cameron and Matt LeFever
exhibited lambs. Randi Nickels,
Melissa Better, David Byers,
Tonya Lee and Adrianne Ran-
som exhibited hogs. "Randi Nick-
els was the champion senior
showman in the swine depart-
ment and David Byers was the
reserve champion senior show-
man. Mark Hoetor and David
Byers participated in ag mechan-
ics. Adrianne Ransom, David
Byers, Kelly Link, Melissa Bet-
ter, and Randi Nickels compet-
ed in livestock judging. The FFA
held it's annual BBQ during the
livestock auction.

The Goldendale FFA first year
members attended an informa-
tional meeting at Zillah High
School on Sept.18. The students
attended workshops discussing
the many opportunities available
to FFA members.
NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION
The National FFA Convention
was held Oct. 27 through Nov. 1
in Louisville, Ky. There were
40,000 FFA members attending
including Randi Nickels from the
Goldendale Chapter. Randi was
one of the Washington state del-
egates and traveled with the state
officers. Raridi had the opportu-
nity to take several educational
tours during the week. She visit-
ed Churchill Downs, home of the
Kentucky Derby and the Ken-
tucky State Horse Park in Lex-
ington. The world's largest career
show is held in conjunction with
this the nation's largest youth
leadership conference. Members
were able to talk with represen-
tatives from leading agricultural
universities and corporations
from throughout America. The
Goldendale FFA chapter received
national recognition during the
convention for their accomplish-
ments in their community.
BOWLING PAgTV
The annual FFA chapter bowl-
ing party was held at Golden
Lanes on Oct. ~7. The attendace
was good with 15 members or
more sharing pizza and bowling.
It was said to be lots of laughs
and tons of fun.
PUYALLUP FAIR
This year, the Goldendale FFA
chapter had a very impressive
year at the 2003 state fair in
Puyallup Sept. 17 - 21. There were
seven members who exhibited
swine at this year's fair. This was
the largest number of pigs ever
