Glenwood track fields contenders -- Standing on the blustery field at the Mullen/Leavitt invitational tournament last Thursday in The Dalles, Glenwood Eagles' track coach Tom Eldred paused as he named off the members of his team present at the meet. "Hmm, I guess I should have counted," he joked. Glenwood's team is five strong -- not bad, considering the small community it repre- sents. And as Eldred noted proud- ly, the town has had a track team every year since 1968. He should know, having coached the team for virtually all of that time. This year's edition consists of "solid kids, primarily throwers," he said. It is hard to miss big Mitch Wheelhouse, with his crew- cut and the team's sensible, black-block-caps-on-red jer- sey. Wheelhouse has been to State twice in the shotput and discus, and also throws the javelin, said Eldred. Wheelhouse placed sixth in the shot and eighth in discus last year. "He's strong as an ox," said Eldred. ~On Thursday, Wheelhouse tied for first in the discus and placed second in the shotput. Tanner Becks is also a thrower, competing in the shotput, discus and javelin. Becks went to State last year, too, but didn't medal, accord- ing to Eldred. Becks placed fifth in the discus on Thursday. Eldred is quick to note stats for Tony Leiter, the team's "every year since PhotO t Glenwood's Mitch Wheelhouse at Saturday's only sprinter and vaulter. "He's run the 40o in 54 sec- onds and has vaulted lO'6," said his coach. Leiter also runs the 30o- meter hurdles. On Thurdsay, Leiter topped the field in the 8oo-meter rtm. According to Eldred, Leiter was hurt last year, from a freak accident in which he pulled stomach muscles dur- ing a sprint. "How do you do that?" asked Eldred. Leiter has recovered, he said, and hopes to be at full speed (and height) this season. Two girls team: Kayleigh throws the shot and Candi said her coach, maybe jump." Fast.pitch team study in coo The Klickitat/Glenwood girls' fast-pitch softball roster is razor-thin, with 11, maybe 12 girls on the squad. Thank neighborly Glenwood, too small to field its own team, for providing four (or five) of those girls. Added to Klickitat's seven, they make the team big enough to com- pete. With two coaches from Klickitat and one from Glenwood, and a practice a week and two games in the more northerly town, the team represents a true joint effort. Head coach Yvette Schultz, who is from Klickitat and has coached the Vandals' teams for twelve years, led the girls' practice last Thursday after- noon. "We've been at the top of our league the last four years," said Schultz. Last year Klickitat lost a championship game to Lyle. But this year, she added, with only two return- ing starters, the team is "young and learning." During the first part of the season, Schultz and ca-coach- es Traci Kessinger, also from Klickitat, and Sandra Pooler of Glenwood, will work on estab- lishng their players' positions. 'Tv'e only have one pitcher. A couple of girls are working on being a backup. I also lost my catcher, and three girls are try- hag out. That position takes knowledge and strength." Anchoring the team is sen- ior pitcher Kaeley Schultz, with a quick and accurate ann. The other returning senior is Jade Sanchey. : As it happens, all four play- ers currently coming from Glenwood are juniors, includ- Ii ing Hanna Paige, Dora Star, Amanda Kuhnhausen, and Ashley Woodward. Klickitat sophomores Brittany Lenke and Sherri Brewer were not at practice this day; they are also on the track team, and in The Dalles. Three freshme~ the roster: Felicia Mason.
