GOLDENDALE, WASHINGTON SEPTEMBER 13,2017--13 JARYD CLINE SPORTS EDITOR After a week that saw two straight Goldendale home soccer games get postponed, the Timberwolves opening game finally took place on Saturday with the Royal Knights making the long trip. However, the Timber- wolves dropped their season opener 5-0 to the Knights during Saturday's make-up game. Despite the loss, Golden- dale was able to play with great control throughout the game, and combined to play great defense as a team throughout the f'u'st half of the game. "At the beginning of the game we had control in the first quarter," fourth year head coach Anna DeMott said. "We played in their half of the field and had some shots on goal. We were really off fensive." Still a very young team with eight freshmen, De- falls in JARYD CLINE FILE PHOTO BALL CONTROL: Goldendale's Faith Hastings controls the ball during last year's home game against Naches. Mott also said that inexperi- ence was one of the deciding factors in the game. After the Knights went up 1-0, that seemed to take the air out of the young team. "I think they haven't had opener, enough time on the field to know that they're still in the game (after falling behind 1- 0)," DeMott said. The handful of postponed games early this season cer- tainly didn't help the girls, who were set to start league play on Tuesday, and were loaded onto the bus, before it was announced that it was postponed. "The girls were so disap- pointed (Tuesday)," DeMott said. The Timberwolves were supposed to play on the road in Zillah for its first South Central Athletic Conference West match, but that game was canceled because of poor air quality in the valley The schools are looking at dates to make the game up. The game might be made up today, but was unknown as of press time. The Wolves are back at home on Thursday for another SCAC West game against the Granger Spartans kicking off at 4 p.m. COUGARS From Page t4 He took the handoff on an inside run play and burst through the hole and headed toward the sideline, where he out- sprinted Singleton and scored. Montoya then punched the bail in from two yards out for the two- point conversion. The Jaguars scored once more with one second left to make it 42-8, almost the same score as when the Seahawks beat the Bron- cos in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Cougars come to Goldendale later this week for a nonconfer- ence matchup with the Timberwolves with kick- off set for 7 p.m.at Barthlow Field. Lyle- Wishram-Klickitat won 22-0 over the Wolves in Lyle last season. Brandon Montoya Abby Hedges, front, and Jade Smith first XC meet Saturday Goldendale's cross country team, after a week with no meet and practicing inside, is set for its first meet on Satur- day in Cowiche. The Timberwolves will be among 35 high school teams in attendance for the 12th an- nual Apple Ridge Run Chal- lenge Cross Country Meet with the three-mile varsity I boys and girls races starting at 11 a.m. The five-person Bickleton Pirates XC squad also will be in attendance in Cowiche after its first meet also was canceled due to bad air quality, WOLVES From Page 14 There has been some grow- ing pains early on for Golden- dale, but that was to be ex- pected for the young team. Al- though they have 10 seniors this year, the Timberwolves have had to rely on some of the younger players. The team has 21 freshmen and sophomores, but just three ju- niors. With a short week to get ready for Friday's game with Lyle-Wishram-Klickitat, Hale and the rest of the staff are going to take it easy on the team this week at prac- tice. This year marks the sec- ond straight year the Wolves and Cougars will meet after Lyle made the jump to n man football after playing years of eight-man football. Goldendale will be working in practice on how to stop the Cougars sophomore back Brandon Montoya, who can do just about everything on the football field. "He's a spectacular athlete, no way around that," Hale said. "We have to be ready for that. Have all the gaps cov- ered." Kickoff for Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. at Barthlow Field.
