Here it is, Christmas Eve. Tell me, are the stockings hung by the
chimney with care? Do visions of sugar-plums dance in your
head? I can tell you that in my house no mice are stirring, but
frisky felines continue to eye the Christmas tree with mischievous
intent. No kerchiefs or caps adorn the Johnston heads, but
after spending many days battling a wicked bout of the flu, our
brains most certainly need a long winter's nap. Honestly?. All
my husband and I want for Christmas is to stop coughing and
experience uninterrupted sleep.
Funny how Christmas wishes evolve as one grows "long in the
tooth.~ Here's me on Christmas morning, 1975: "Get up, get up!
it's time to open presents! OMG - there's a two-foot-tail stuffed
Pink Panther under the tree[ YAYW And hero's me, Christmas
morning, present day: "It's 9 a.m.? Too early - back to sleep.
777 "Yep, wishes get simpler and less expensive as the years
go by. One of the perks of aging, I guess (and goodness knows,
we deserve it.)
SLEEP
S O L UTI O N
So, it's time for another miscellaneous reading list to carry you
through the holidays and beyond. With the help of the titles listed
below, you'll climb a mountain, take photos of the stars (the
celestial variety), improve your sleep and bake apple cinnamon
buns. You might also team something about the cocoa bean and
encounter a rather motley crew of sometimes snark'/, sometimes
profound mammals What could be better?.
By the way. now that it's officially wintertime you're allowed to
increase your daily reading time. I just made that up, but feel
free to run with it.The library heartily approves this message.
Glad tidings to all!

It's a book about chocolate. Need I say more?

"Making Winter: A Hygge-lnsplrod Guide fur Surviving the
Winter Months" by Emma Mitchell.
In my bumble
opinion, reading isoa
great way to survive
the winter months.
But if you crave a bit
more variety in your
wintertide activities
(just not the skiing/
snowboarding/
sledding kind) find
youi'way to this gentle
do-it-yourself guide.
Comfort yourself with
a plate of Plum and
Orange Blondies, or, festoon your arms with Hawthorn Wrist
Warmers. Whatever you choose to make, a feeling of well-being
and coziness is sure to follow.
"Ni~t Photography:. From Snapshots to Great Shots" by
Gabdel Blderman.
When I decided to include Gabriel Biderman's book in this
week's reading list, the weather forecast called for a string of
cold, clear nights. However, the Pacific Northwest can be very
fickle weather-wise, so you may or may not be able to practice
your night photography right away. No matter. Go ahead and
team the basics about digital night photography (even galaxies
have good sides and bad sides), and the next time Old Man
Winter offers up a cloudless night grab your camera and focus.
"The Sleep Solution: WhyYour
Sleep Is Broken and How to
Fix It" by Chds W. Winter.
I know why my sleep is
broken - this #@&%^! flu
bug. Sometimes, though, not
gotting enough sleep has
nothing to do with germs but
everything to do with nutrition
or environment or stress,
stress, stress. If good sleep is
eluding you, let Chris W. Winter,
a neurologist and sleep expert,
lead the way to more restful
nights. Sweet dreams.
,Ungrateful Mammals" by Dave Eggers.
You may be familiar with Dave Eggors' writing specifically his
best-selling memoir "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering
Genius."You might also know that he founded the literary journal
"McSweeneys" and has written several screenplays including the
recent release "The Circle: But did you know that Dave Eggors
is also an artist? "Ungrateful Mammals" is a unique collection,
made up of animal ~rawings paired with what art curator and
professor, Natasha B3as, calls "rejoinders from everyday life or
quotes from the Bible, which Eggsrs regards as poetry." Quirky,
sometimes confounding, the messages offer both enlightenment
and sharp humor. A beaver claims, =Open rebuke is better than
secret love" while a standard schnauzer is described as "not to
be trusted with family finances or estate planning of any kind."
What does it all mean? I'd say the book is open to interpretation
- perfect for Ibng winter nights.

When I grew up, or perhaps where I grew up, syrups for drinks, like chocolate syrup for
chocolate milk wasn't a thing. We made our chocolate milk from scratch with milk, sugar
and powdered cocoa (sometimes powdered milk as well) and our syrups were simple
made of sugar, water and concentrated flavorings With the all the flavored syrups for
beverages on the shelf, waiting to be savored, it makes my mouth water. They are,
however, expensive. The cost of the shelf rent, the cost to package with preservation
techniques such unique items, plus the mega bucks needed to advertise them brings the
dollar amount to sample such wares beyond my pocket book. But I can make my own
from scratch, which I'd venture to say, taste better and are better for my family. And now
that the Christmas rush is over, it is time to relax for a moment with a cup of home made
hot chocolate. It's easier to make than you'd think I remember hot cocoa from scratch
as a child. Sometimes our neighbor's preteen daughter would make it when we went to
visit them. (By neighbor I mean they lived a few miles down the road. We had big back
yards.) It was such a treat. She even used real milk, not the powdered stuff!
Chocolate Sauce
1/2 cup powdered cocoa
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup of water
Mix cocoa powder and sugar together in a sauce pan. Stir in the water. Bring to a boil
over medium heat stirring constantly. Boil and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat, cool
until it can be handled safely then pour into a storage container- a t/2 pint mason jar
works well. Store in the fridge, for up to a month after that the syrup may crystallize and
be suited only for adding to hot drinks.
Choices: Add 1/2 a teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the powdered cocoa as the sugar
is added. Add a teaspoon of vanilla. For Mocha, substitute coffee for part or all of the
water. Add peppermint flavoring, drop by drop to suit your taste. This syrup goes nicely
with vanilla ice cream. Remember the amount of any ingredient added to the dish is up
to the cook (and that includes the sugar- when I Can get away with it, I use 1/2 to 3/4 cup
instead of the whole cup.)
Hot Coco Option: Make HALF the batch of above syrup in a quart and a half sauce pan
large enough to accommodate four cups of milk. Once syrup has boiled for 2 minutes,
add a quart (4 cups) of milk and heat, with stirring, to just this side of simmering. Serve
in mugs.
For those of you who remember how this column started and are interested in reading
The Chicken Challenge in its entirety, Lou at The Sentinel and I are working on a plan
to publish it for our readers in a booklet form. In the meantime it will be posted through
January on the New Life Assembly of God Facebook page. Hope to see you there.
